This article explains when tourists in Chongqing should use the subway or Didi instead of hiring a car, and which situations—late arrivals, families, luggage, or nearby day trips—make a private car worth booking.
Based on local expertise about Chongqing's mountainous layout, this guide explains when a private car is useful versus when metro and Didi are better. It includes practical tips from experienced guides on airport arrivals, family travel, heavy luggage, and navigating the city's complex multi-level roads.
If you're reading this article, you're probably already considering hiring a car in Chongqing. Well, let me give you an honest answer first: for most tourists visiting Chongqing, you likely don't need to hire a car at all. Chongqing's subway system is clean, efficient, cheap, and has extensive coverage. Didi Chuxing (a ride-hailing service) is readily available and reasonably priced. However, if you're reading this article, it's likely because you're facing some kind of transportation problem—arriving at the airport late at night, traveling with elderly people and children, dragging large luggage, or wanting to visit nearby scenic spots—and these are precisely the situations where hiring a car would truly come in handy.

Before deciding whether to hire a car, you need to understand what makes Chongqing special. If you've never been to Chongqing, be prepared—this is a place that will redefine your understanding of what a "city" is.
Chongqing is built on mountains. Not just "some places have mountains," but the entire city is mountains. This means:
Your hotel might be on the "1st floor," but the street is on the "8th floor." It sounds like a joke, but it's the norm in Chongqing. In the Jiefangbei and Hongyadong areas, you walk into a building on the "1st floor," take the elevator to the "8th floor," and step out to find yourself on a completely different street.
GPS often malfunctions here. The complex network of overpasses and viaducts makes navigation systems frequently "lose their way" beneath them—a real technical challenge.
Two places that seem very close, perhaps only 500 meters apart as the crow flies, may actually require a 20-minute uphill walk.
Taxi and ride-hailing drivers must be familiar with the terrain. A driver who doesn't know the way is useless in Chongqing. This is why, when hiring a car in Chongqing, the driver's local experience is more important than any luxury vehicle.
In Chongqing, the "real difficulties" of getting around are often not the distance, but the complex terrain, the high energy expenditure of walking, and the inconvenient connections between attractions. These factors are the real reasons for deciding whether or not to hire a car.
Before deciding whether to charter a car, you need to understand the real cost differences.
Jiangbei Airport → Jiefangbei: Subway 6-8 yuan (approx. 50 minutes); Airport shuttle bus 20-25 yuan (approx. 60 minutes); Taxi/Didi fare approx. 20-30 yuan (daytime), approx. 55-65 yuan (nighttime), 30-40 minutes; Charter car fare (including driver) approx. 200-300 yuan
Chongqing → Wulong: High-speed rail fare approximately 60 yuan (if you choose to arrive at Wulong Station, the fare will be around 20 yuan) + local transportation approximately 20 yuan (approximately 2.5-3 hours one way); one-way taxi fare approximately 300-400 yuan (not cost-effective); chartered car fare approximately 700-1200 yuan (round trip, including tolls).
Chongqing → Dazu Rock Carvings (surrounding tour): High-speed rail approximately 40 RMB + local transportation approximately 50-60 RMB, round trip approximately 160 RMB/person (approximately 2 hours one way); Didi (ride-hailing service) approximately 150-200 RMB one way; chartered car approximately 900-1300 RMB.
Solo travel: Chartering a car costs 5-10 times more than public transportation. Unless there are special circumstances (arriving late at night, mobility issues), it's not economically worthwhile.
Small groups of 3-5 people: The price difference between chartering a car and public transportation narrows significantly. For example, a day trip to Wulong costs about 100 RMB per person for high-speed rail + local transportation; while chartering a car costs about 750-1200 RMB, or 200-400 RMB per person. The extra 100 RMB per person buys you a car that's readily available, no transfers, and no need to rush for the high-speed rail—whether it's worth it depends on your budget.
Basic Information:
Jiangbei Airport is approximately 22 kilometers from Jiefangbei.
The airport has two terminals, T2 and T3, which are about 1.5 kilometers apart, requiring a 15-20 minute walk.
Comparison of modes of transportation:
Subway: Approximately 50-60 minutes (requires transfers), fare 6-8 yuan, cheapest option, but transfers are inconvenient, especially with a lot of luggage.
Airport Shuttle Bus K01: Approximately 50-70 minutes, fare 20-25 yuan, cheapest option, direct to Jiefangbei, but schedules are fixed, with fewer services at night.
Taxi/Ride-hailing: 30-40 minutes, fare 20-25 yuan, 20-30 yuan during the day, 55-65 yuan at night, convenient and fast, but traffic jams are possible during peak hours, and there are surcharges at night.
Chartered Car: 30-40 minutes, approximately 150 yuan or more (5-seater sedan), includes airport pickup and luggage assistance, but the price is double that of a taxi.
Airport car transfer: If you are traveling alone or with one other person with light luggage, arriving in Chongqing during the day or your hotel is near a subway station, we recommend choosing public transportation. Based on the prices listed above, a private car transfer would be very expensive and not worthwhile for you.

Although Chongqing's urban attractions are concentrated in Yuzhong District, Jiangbei District, and Nan'an District, Chongqing's topography makes what "looks close" actually "very far away."
If you choose to stay within a specific area of Chongqing, such as the Jiefangbei-Yangtze River Cableway route,it's only an 11-minute walk. However, if you're traveling across different areas, from the Yangtze River Cableway to Ciqikou,it takes 50 minutes by subway. From Ciqikou to your hotel or other attractions, public transportation will also take over 50 minutes. Taking a taxi will shorten the travel time, but you'll need to be proficient in using Chinese ride-hailing apps, and in popular tourist areas, you might have to wait.
If you're visiting Chongqing in the summer, I don't recommend independent travel. In the heat, you'll need to wait for a taxi, and public transportation will reduce your sightseeing time.In this case, you might consider hiring a car to explore Chongqing.
A chartered car(5-7 seats, approximately 600-700 RMB for 8 hours)can pick you up directly from your hotel and take you to the entrance of each attraction. After the tour, you can return to the car, enjoy the air conditioning, and head to the next attraction. Moreover, if you share the cost with friends, it only costs a little over 100 RMB per person. For those planning to visit 3-4 attractions in a day, a chartered car can save at least 2-3 hours of transfer and walking time.Importantly, you can leave your luggage in the car, and if you need to travel to another city that evening, you can simply take your luggage to the airport after your tour.

The Dazu Rock Carvings, located approximately 100 kilometers from downtown Chongqing, are a World Cultural Heritage site renowned for their exquisite Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian stone carvings.
High-speed rail/bus option:
Take a bus from Chongqing Caiyuanba Bus Station to Dazu city(approximately 2 hours, fare approximately 50 RMB). Upon arrival, transfer to a local bus or taxi to the Baodingshan Rock Carvings scenic area(approximately 20 minutes, fare approximately 15-20 RMB). The entire journey takes approximately 2.5 hours and costs approximately 70 RMB.
Alternatively, take the high-speed rail from Chongqing West Station to Dazu South Station(approximately 40 minutes, second-class seat approximately 40-50 RMB), then take a taxi from Dazu South Station to the scenic area(approximately 30 minutes, fare approximately 30-40 RMB).
Charter car option:
Direct drive from your hotel in downtown Chongqing to the entrance of Dazu Rock Carvings Scenic Area, approximately 2 hours (about 100 kilometers), costing approximately 900-1300yuan (5-7 seater car, round trip including tolls).
Analysis of the disadvantages of public transportation:
The biggest problem with public transportation is the "last mile." High-speed rail/buses can only take you to Dazu city center or Dazu South Station; the scenic area is still 20-30 kilometers away, requiring a transfer to a taxi or public bus. If you are unfamiliar with the local area, this transfer can consume a lot of time and energy.
The Dazu Rock Carvings are divided into two main scenic areas: Baodingshan Rock Carvings and Beishan Rock Carvings, about 2 kilometers apart. If you want to visit both, public transportation requires another transfer between the two scenic areas.
Therefore, if you are traveling alone or with only one other person, I do not recommend hiring a car for your trip, as it is not worthwhile for you. However, if you are a small group of 4-5 people and hire a car to share the cost, it will only cost around 200 yuan per person for the entire trip without any transfers or route planning. Alternatively, if you want to visit both Baodingshan and Beishan scenic areas in one trip, the price for hiring a car is the same.

Wulong is one of the most representative natural scenic spots around Chongqing, boasting attractions such as the Three Natural Bridges (a filming location forTransformers 4), a World Natural Heritage site, Longshuixia Gorge, and Fairy Mountain National Forest Park.
High-speed rail + bus option:Take the high-speed rail from Chongqing North Station to Wulong Station (approximately 2 hours, second-class seat approximately 25 RMB). Upon arrival, transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi to the Three Natural Bridges scenic area (approximately 30 minutes, approximately 15-20 RMB). Transfers are required between attractions; the entire journey takes approximately 2.5-3 hours one way, and 5-6 hours round trip in terms of transportation.
Chartered car option:Direct drive from your Chongqing city hotel to the Wulong scenic area entrance, approximately 3 hours, costing approximately 1100-1600 RMB (7-seater van, round trip including tolls).
Problems with a day trip to Wulong:The biggest problem with a day trip to Wulong is that if you choose public transportation, you will waste a lot of time on transportation. Also, if you choose to stay in Wulong, you will need to carry your luggage, which can leave you feeling exhausted.
When is it appropriate to hire a car in Wulong? If you're traveling with elderly people or children, a 3-4 hour journey using public transportation is too strenuous for them. For group tours, the price of a chartered car is ¥100-¥200 more expensive than public transportation, but it allows you to rest on the vehicle instead of waiting at the station.

f you plan to spend 2-3 days exploring the areas surrounding Chongqing (e.g., Wulong + Fairy Mountain, or Dazu + other destinations), these areas are all over 100 kilometers from downtown Chongqing. While choosing high-speed rail combined with local transportation is cheaper than hiring a car, you'll need at least 8-10 transfers over two days (subway → high-speed rail → taxi → scenic area bus → taxi → high-speed rail → subway...). You'll be dragging your luggage between the station and your hotel. Missing your high-speed train could mean waiting one or two hours.
The main advantage of hiring a car in this situation is avoiding multiple transfers, allowing you to travel at your own pace.
When is "high-speed rail + independent travel" more suitable?
Solo travel: Chartering a car for two days costs 2500-3000 yuan, while public transportation only costs 600-800 yuan, a price difference of more than 3 times.
Light backpackers: Carrying only one bag makes transfers much less of a hassle.
You enjoy planning and experiencing local transportation—for some, taking the high-speed rail, transferring, and finding local snacks are part of the travel experience itself.
In 2026 China, hailing a taxi will essentially be synonymous with ride-hailing services. Cash payments and hailing taxis by waving on the street will disappear.

Registration Steps:
Download the Didi App (search "DiDi")
Open the App and tap "Account" in the bottom right corner
Enter your mobile phone number (select the correct country/region code), verify, and complete registration.
Go to "Wallet" → "Payment Methods" and link your credit card.
It is recommended to enable automatic password-free payment.
Ride-hailing Steps:
Enter your destination on the homepage (it is recommended to find the address on a map app first, then copy and paste it into Didi).
Didi will automatically locate your current position (location services need to be enabled).
Select a vehicle type (Economy, Standard, Premier, prices from low to high).
Confirm your ride and wait for the driver to accept the order.
After getting in the car, you can share the trip with friends and family.
Automatic payment will be deducted upon arrival (if password-free payment is enabled).
Didi has an English interface. You can switch the language in the app settings.
Didi's taxi services support cash payment, but if you want a more comfortable and faster ride (Express or Premier), you can only pay online.
If you have already registered with WeChat or Alipay and completed real-name authentication, you can also use the Didi mini-program directly within WeChat/Alipay without downloading an additional app.
The price you see when you book a car is not the actual price; it includes many other costs:
Toll fees: The one-way toll fee from Chongqing to Wulong is approximately 80-100 RMB. You must ask if it's included in the price.
Parking fees: Parking fees at Ciqikou, Hongyadong, and Nanshan are 10-20 RMB per visit, potentially exceeding 50 RMB per day. Make sure to clarify whether parking fees are included.
Overtime fees: If your chartered car booking on the platform shows an 8-hour service, please note the charges for exceeding 8 hours.
Holiday surcharges: Prices double during May Day, National Day, and Spring Festival. Booking in advance will save you money.
Mileage restrictions: Some low-priced chartered cars only cover 100 kilometers, so be sure to ask if there are any mileage restrictions.
Cancellation policy: Is a refund available if cancelled within 24 hours of departure?
Does your group have 3 or more people?
Traveling alone means you'll be paying for the entire chartered car cost, which is typically 5-10 times the price of public transport. A car with 4 people is the most economical option. The more people, the more cost-effective the chartered car becomes.
Does your group include anyone over 65 or a child under 5?
This is crucial. The elderly and children tire most easily. Even just one elderly person or one child significantly increases the value of the chartered car. You're not just paying for the fare, but also for their comfort and your own peace of mind.
Will you visit more than two attractions in one day?
If you're only visiting one attraction (like Hongyadong), a chartered car isn't necessary—a taxi will suffice for one way. But if you're going to Ciqikou in the morning, having lunch at Jiefangbei, and then seeing the night view from Nanshan Yikeshu in the afternoon, making three or four trips a day, each time requiring you to call, wait for, and confirm pick-up locations—a chartered car allows you to leave all your luggage in the car and go wherever you want.
Is your destination more than 50 kilometers from the city center?
If the distance exceeds 50 kilometers, a one-way trip takes over an hour, and a round trip takes over three hours. In this case, public transportation, while cheaper, requires multiple transfers. Chartering a car allows you to rest on the bus instead of rushing between transfer stations. For long day trips, chartering a car is more cost-effective than short city tours.
Do you have more than three large pieces of luggage?
Dragging three 28-inch suitcases on the subway, changing high-speed trains, and squeezing onto buses—anyone who has experienced it knows it's a nightmare. With a chartered car, you can simply throw your luggage into the trunk.
If you have more than two of these problems, we recommend hiring a private car, which will reduce a lot of unnecessary trouble.
The best time to visit Chongqing is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when temperatures are pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities.
During Chongqing's summer (June-August), it's not recommended to explore the city center due to the extreme heat. If you're using public transportation, you might not be able to enjoy your visit for long. If you have time during the summer, you can visit the mountainous areas (Wulong, Fairy Mountain).

In Chongqing, hiring a car is a necessity, not a luxury. It solves specific travel problems: long distances, multiple transfers, tight schedules, heavy luggage, or fatigue for the elderly or children. If you don't encounter these problems, hiring a car might actually increase costs and reduce travel flexibility.
If you decide to hire a car, please take the time to confirm the five questions mentioned above—especially any hidden fees. The vast majority of car rental complaints stem from discrepancies between the quoted price and the actual bill. Advance communication will make your trip much smoother.
Have a great time in Chongqing!
