Zhangjiajie is a world-famous tourist city in northwestern Hunan Province, China, renowned for its extraordinary quartz sandstone peak forests, deep valleys, transparent streams, and misty mountain views. As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and the inspiration for Avatar’s floating mountains, it blends spectacular natural scenery with rich Tujia, Bai and Miao ethnic customs, attracting millions of visitors seeking breathtaking landscapes every year.
Why Private Car
Traveling by private car in Zhangjiajie offers great flexibility to move between distant scenic areas such as the national park, Tianmen Mountain and surrounding attractions at your own pace, allowing you to avoid fixed schedules and crowded shuttles while easily reaching less central viewing spots and enjoying comfortable travel with luggage and photography equipment.
Without a Car
Public transport between major scenic spots in Zhangjiajie is limited and infrequent, often requiring long waits or transfers, while taxis are in short supply during peak tourist seasons and may charge higher fares; ride-hailing services can be unreliable in remote mountain areas, with long pickup times and limited availability near scenic entrances.

Everything you need to plan your Zhangjiajie private car tour.
Best Season
The best seasons are spring (March–May) with fresh green mountains and blooming flowers, and autumn (September–November) with clear skies, excellent visibility and colorful foliage. Summer is green but rainy, while winter offers quiet, snowy peak scenery.
Airport Transfer
Zhangjiajie's main airport is Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG), with private airport pickup starting from $35. The drive to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park or central Zhangjiajie usually takes around 40-60 minutes depending on traffic and your destination.
Car Tip
For 1-2 travelers, a standard sedan is fine for city and scenic area transfers; for 3-5, a roomy SUV is much more comfortable for mountain roads. If you're combining Zhangjiajie city sights with multi-day national park and Tianmen Mountain tours, book a multi-day private car rather than separate transfers.
