Suzhou, a renowned historical and cultural city in Jiangsu Province, is famous as the “Venice of the East”. With more than 2,500 years of history, it boasts exquisite classical gardens, crisscrossing waterways, elegant stone bridges and distinctive Jiangnan folk culture. It perfectly combines peaceful water town scenery, delicate traditional architecture and gentle southern China charm, making it one of the most poetic travel destinations in China.
Why Private Car
Suzhou’s classical gardens, water towns and scenic spots are distributed in both the urban area and surrounding towns. A private car allows you to travel flexibly between gardens and water towns without being restricted by public transport routes and schedules. It saves plenty of transfer time, offers comfortable space for families and groups, and makes it much easier to visit distant water town attractions, greatly improving travel efficiency and comfort.
Without a Car
Suzhou’s public transport covers urban gardens but requires frequent transfers to reach suburban water towns, with low efficiency. Taxis are hard to find during peak tourist seasons and may charge higher fares for long-distance trips. Ride-hailing services often show price surges and long waiting times in garden and water town scenic areas. None of these can match the flexibility of a private chartered car.

Practical Information
Everything you need to plan your Suzhou private car tour.
Best Season
The best time to visit Suzhou is March to May, when spring blossoms decorate the gardens and water towns with gentle and pleasant scenery. October to December is also ideal, with cool autumn air, clear skies and peaceful Jiangnan views. Summer is hot and humid, while winter is mild but relatively quiet, so summer is less comfortable for long outdoor sightseeing.
Airport Transfer
Suzhou relies on Shanghai's airports; most travelers arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, with private pickup starting from $50. The drive to central Suzhou usually takes around 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.
Car Tip
For 1-2 travelers, a standard sedan is fine for garden sightseeing; for 3-5, a roomy MPV is much more comfortable. If you're combining Suzhou city gardens with a water town day trip, book a full-day car rather than separate transfers.
