Shangri-La, located in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan, is known as the earthly utopia depicted in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon. It sits on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, blending magnificent snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands, crystal alpine lakes, profound Tibetan Buddhist culture and unique ethnic customs. It is a sacred land of purity, tranquility and mystery, attracting countless travelers seeking peace and natural beauty.
Why Private Car
A private car is highly recommended for Shangri-La as its scenic spots are widely spread across plateaus and mountains, allowing flexible stops for sightseeing and photography. It helps travelers avoid tiring transfers and long waits, and can easily reach remote grasslands and villages unreachable by public transport. It also supports flexible itinerary changes to fit plateau weather and personal physical conditions.
Without a Car
Public transport in Shangri-La has limited routes and infrequent services, failing to cover remote scenic areas. Taxis are scarce in peak seasons and often charge fixed high prices instead of metered fares. Ride-hailing is hard to book in remote spots, with long waits and surge pricing during holidays. None of these allow flexible stops to enjoy plateau scenery.

Car Tip
For 1-2 travelers, a standard sedan is fine for city and short nearby trips; for 3-5 or family groups, a spacious SUV is much more comfortable due to mountainous roads. If you're combining downtown sights with day trips to Pudacuo or Songzanlin Monastery, book a full-day private car rather than separate transfers.
