The best way to travel from Xi'an to Mount Hua

Mount Hua is one of the most popular day-trip destinations near Xi'an. It is renowned for its sheer cliffs, spectacular mountain scenery, cable car rides, and many of China's most thrilling hiking trails. Although Mount Hua is not far from Xi'an, planning your itinerary in advance is crucial. The climb itself requires plenty of time, and your choice of transportation will directly determine whether your day is leisurely and pleasant or rushed and chaotic.

The primary modes of transport include high-speed rail, chartered cars, and standard trains or long-distance buses, with each option suiting different types of travelers. This guide covers how to travel from Xi'an to Mount Hua, the travel time involved, and when it is worth considering a chartered car.

How far is Mount Hua from Xi'an?

Mount Hua is located in Huayin City, east of Xi'an, approximately 120 kilometers from Xi'an's city center.

The travel times required for different modes of transport are as follows:

  • High-speed train: Approx. 30–40 minutes (from Xi'an North Station to Huashan North Station)

  • Private car/chartered vehicle: Usually approx. 1.5–2 hours

  • Ordinary trains or long-distance buses: These are also options, but they are not very convenient for most first-time international visitors.

For most travelers, Mount Hua can be visited as a day trip from Xi'an.

The best way to travel from Xi'an to Huashan

Option 1: High-speed rail

High-speed rail is usually the fastest way to reach Mount Hua.

A typical route for traveling from Xi'an to Mount Hua by high-speed rail is as follows:

  • Hotel in Xi'an → Xi'an North Railway Station

  • Xi'an North Railway Station → Huashan North Railway Station

  • Huashan North Railway Station → Mount Hua Visitor Center

  • Visitor Center → Cable car entrance or hiking trail

The train journey from Xi'an North to Huashan North typically takes about 30 to 40 minutes. However, once you factor in the time spent traveling to Xi'an North Station by subway or taxi, waiting at the station, going through ticket checks, and arranging local transport upon arrival, the total travel time will be longer.

Suitable for:

  • Solo travelers

  • Budget-conscious travelers

  • Travelers familiar with the procedures at Chinese train stations

  • Travelers staying near Xi'an North Railway Station

Option 2: Private Chartered Car

A private chartered car may not necessarily be faster than high-speed rail, but for travelers seeking a smoother journey, it often offers greater peace of mind. This isn't always the cheapest option, but it's probably the most convenient.

Suitable for:

  • Families

  • Small groups

  • Tourists staying in downtown Xi'an

  • Travelers who prefer to avoid multiple transfers

  • Hikers planning a round trip in a single day

  • Tourists needing an early start or those with fixed evening plans

The main advantage of a private chartered car is convenience: it offers hotel pick-up and drop-off, direct transport to the Huashan Scenic Area, and a return trip straight to your hotel after the tour. This is especially appreciated after a full day of hiking.

Option 3: Long-distance bus or regular train

Long-distance buses and regular trains are two other public transport options—aside from high-speed trains and chartered vehicles—for traveling from Xi'an to Huashan; both are more economical than high-speed trains but take longer.

  • Long-distance bus: The advantage of long-distance buses is the high frequency of departures, though the journey takes longer—typically around 2.5 to 3 hours.

  • Standard trains: These are the most economical option, but please note that they arrive at a conventional railway station rather than the high-speed rail station, and there is still some distance to the scenic area. The journey from the station to Huashan—combining the train ride and a taxi—takes approximately 2.5 hours.

If your travel style prioritizes minimizing costs, ordinary trains are the way to go; if you prefer to avoid the hassle of multiple transfers, long-distance buses are a better option. However, these choices assume you are well-versed in how to use China's bus and train systems and possess at least a basic command of Chinese.

Which route is best for a first-time visit to Mount Hua?

For most first-time international visitors, taking the cable car is the most practical way to experience Mount Hua.

Classic One-Day Hiking Route

  • route: Visitor Center – Park Bus – North Peak Cable Car – North Peak – 2-hour hike – East Peak – 30-minute hike – 20-minute hike – South Peak – 30-minute hike – West Peak – 15-minute hike – West Peak Cable Car – Visitor Center

  • Duration: 8–9 hours (starting and ending at the Visitor Center)

Most tourists choose this route, as it offers a view of all the scenery on Mount Hua.

Relaxed One-Day Hiking Plan

Itinerary Overview: Visitor Center – Park Bus – West Peak Cable Car – West Peak – 30-minute hike – South Peak – 20-minute hike – Sky Bridge – 30-minute hike – East Peak – 30-minute hike – West Peak Cable Car – Visitor Center.

The entire journey takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

The North Peak Cable Car only takes you to the North Peak—the lowest of the five peaks—requiring a further two-hour hike to reach the East Peak. To avoid such a long trek, you can instead take the park bus directly to the West Peak Cable Car station, ascend the West Peak by cable car, and then embark on a ridge-top walk. The West Peak, South Peak, East Peak, and the famous Plank Walk in the Sky are all relatively close to one another; after exploring these areas, you can simply descend via the West Peak Cable Car. With its gentler gradients and conveniently located stops, this route is ideal for older visitors or families with children, allowing them to enjoy the mountain scenery at a leisurely pace.

A more leisurely route

If you are short on time, you can take the North Peak or West Peak cable car up the mountain and then choose to explore selected highlights on foot, depending on your energy levels. This allows you to enjoy the mountain scenery without spending too much time.

Suggested Itinerary for a Day Trip to Mount Hua from Xi'an

  • Ideally, depart between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. If traveling by high-speed train, please allow sufficient time to reach Xi'an North Railway Station. If you have chartered a vehicle, you can depart directly from your hotel.

  • Morning: Arrive at the Huashan Visitor Center. Purchase or collect your tickets based on your chosen route, then take the scenic area shuttle bus or cable car.

  • Midday to Afternoon: Explore the mountain. Visit key viewpoints and various peaks depending on your stamina. You may bring your own food or purchase it within the scenic area.

  • Late Afternoon: Descend the mountain via cable car and return to the Visitor Center.

  • Evening: Return to Xi'an. If you have chartered a vehicle, you can return directly to your hotel. If taking the high-speed train, please allow sufficient time for the shuttle bus or taxi ride to Huashan North Station and for waiting for your train.

If you take the cable car and set out early, a single day is sufficient for most travelers.

High-Speed Rail vs. Private Car Charter: Which Is Better?

Choose high-speed rail if:

  • You are traveling light

  • You are familiar with how Chinese train stations operate

  • You want the fastest rail connection

  • You don't mind needing local transfers at both ends

  • You are on a tighter budget

Opt for a private chartered car if:

  • You want the convenience of a seamless, door-to-door service (hotel-to-hotel)

  • You are traveling with family or elderly companions

  • You wish to minimize the number of transfers

  • You want to depart early or have flexibility with your return time

  • You are concerned about physical exhaustion after hiking

  • You are unfamiliar with navigating transportation in China

Neither option is absolutely "better"; the best choice depends on your travel preferences. High-speed rail is a great choice for independent travelers, while families or those seeking a more hassle-free experience will find that hiring a private car makes the journey much more relaxed.

Practical Tips for a One-Day Trip to Mount Hua

  1. Be sure to set out early, especially during summer or public holidays.

  2. Wear appropriate hiking shoes; do not wear casual sandals.

  3. Bring your own drinking water and some light snacks.

  4. Check the cable car operating hours before you leave.

  5. Do not schedule evening flights or trains too close to your return time on the day of the trip.

  6. Mountain weather changes rapidly; it is advisable to bring a light jacket.

  7. If you have a fear of heights, familiarize yourself with the route before deciding to go.

  8. Do not underestimate the walking time and physical exertion required to get between the various viewpoints.
