This article explains how to plan a 1-day Chengdu Panda Base and old city route by chartered car, including total duration, distance, recommended departure time, and why it saves time over public transport.
Based on local expertise, this guide outlines a practical 1-day route linking Chengdu Panda Base with Kuanzhai Alley, Jinli Ancient Street, and Wuhou Temple. It includes practical tips from experienced guides on timing, transport challenges, round-trip distance, and why a chartered car suits families and foreign visitors.
For most travelers, Chengdu is one of the most captivating cities in western China. Two things fascinate people worldwide: the adorable, fluffy giant pandas and the city's inherently relaxed, leisurely pace of life.
However, the panda base is about 10 kilometers from the city center, and popular attractions in the old city—Kuanzhai Alley, Jinli Ancient Street, and Wuhou Temple—are scattered across different neighborhoods, making parking extremely difficult. If you choose to travel alone, taking the subway, buses, shuttle buses to tourist attractions, and then walking, time slips away seamlessly. This is why more and more international travelers are opting for day trips with chartered cars—it saves you time on the journey and allows you to truly immerse yourself in Chengdu's leisurely rhythm.

Total Duration: Approximately 8-10 hours, recommended departure time is 8:30 AM, ending between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Total Distance: Approximately 50-60 kilometers (round trip between Chengdu city center and the Panda Base + attractions in the old city).
Suitable Duration: 1 day (a highlight of a comprehensive Chengdu tour).
Suitable for: Families, foreign tourists concerned about transportation, travelers who want to efficiently experience both pandas and old Chengdu, and travelers with a lot of luggage who don't want to rush to catch public transportation.
Private car hire is recommended for this route:Chengdu Full-Day Panda Base & Old Town
The attractions are clustered together, but connections are difficult to make.
It's about 10 kilometers from the city center to the Panda Base, and returning from the base to the city center to reach Kuanzhai Alley or Jinli is another considerable distance. While this seems like a typical commute, in reality, each transfer means waiting, walking, and finding your way—time that could have been spent enjoying more sights.
High degree of freedom, you control the pace.
Chartering a car means you can stay at the panda base for an extra half hour, perhaps even encountering panda cubs playing around during breakfast; you can also sit a little longer in the teahouses of Kuanzhai Alley without worrying about missing the return bus.
Traffic in the old town is complex.
Parking spaces around Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Temple, and Jinli are "scarce compared to a panda's eye circles." For foreign tourists unfamiliar with local traffic rules, language, and road conditions, planning routes, purchasing tickets, and dealing with unexpected situations can be quite troublesome. However, chartered drivers know the best parking spots and passenger pick-up/drop-off locations, allowing you to reach the attractions directly from your car and leave immediately upon arrival.
A private car experience far surpasses other options.
A clean, comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, an experienced local driver, and the privacy of not having to share a ride with strangers—these are especially precious after a long day of sightseeing. If you can hire an English-speaking guide, that's the icing on the cake, who will explain the fascinating stories about pandas and the history behind the old streets.
Early morning is the "golden window" for visiting the panda base. Pandas are most active in the cool morning air.I suggest you board the bus before 7:30 AM. You should arrive at the base entrance around 7:50 AM, allowing you to be among the first to enter the park. The journey from the city center takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Chengdu's morning rush hour typically begins after 8:00 AM, so departing at this time will effectively avoid the most congested period.
If this is your first time visiting the Giant Panda Base and you haven't opted for a guided tour, we recommend heading straight to the Moon Nursery – rush in before 8:30 AM to see the adorable panda cubs having breakfast.
Afterwards, visitors can follow the park's route to visit the Sun Nursery, the Adult Panda Villa, and the newly opened Hillside Red Panda Ecological Recreation Area.

The hilltop red panda ecological free-range area covers an area equivalent to about 90 standard football fields, so we recommend wearing a pair of comfortable walking shoes.
If you don't have a preferred restaurant, we'll recommend a well-regarded local eatery where you can savor the most authentic Sichuan cuisine.

If it's your first time trying it, you can tell the waiter "mildly spicy" or "less numbing," and the restaurant is happy to adjust the spiciness for international tourists.
After the meal, we can take you to Chengdu Renmin Park to experience gaiwan tea and observe the recreational activities of local Chengdu residents. Other options can also be arranged if you have different preferences.

For 30 RMB, you can experience "ear cleaning," which is essentially having your ears cleaned. The tingling, relaxing sensation will give you an instant and unique experience.
Experience Chengdu snacks: Three Cannons, Sugar-coated Fried Dough Sticks, Zhang Fei Beef… Watch a Sichuan Opera face-changing performance (see the actors change more than a dozen masks in the blink of an eye), and you can also buy your favorite souvenirs here.

With a day full of achievements and countless wonderful photos, we went back to the hotel to rest.

Recommended: Economy sedans (such as Volkswagen Santana or Nissan Sylphy) or compact SUVs. Affordable prices, and the trunk can accommodate 2-3 pieces of checked luggage.
4-5 people (family or friends group)
Recommendation: Urban SUV (such as Haval H6, Honda CR-V), this is the main recommended model in Chengdu's charter car market. Spacious seats, suitable for carrying child seats or a lot of personal belongings.
For users with a lot of luggage or families traveling (6-7 people)
Recommended: 7-seater minivan (such as Buick GL8, Refine MPV). Ample space allows the whole family to sit comfortably, with plenty of room for luggage.
For large groups of 8 or more
Recommended: Medium-sized bus (17-20 seats) or large bus (33-55 seats). Suitable for company team building or family trips.
One-day charter within Chengdu (8 hours, within 100 kilometers) is approximately 800-1000 RMB (5-seater sedan to 7-seater luxury van).
Please note: The prices above typically include vehicle usage fees, fuel costs, driver service fees, and vehicle insurance.
Panda Base adult ticket: ¥55; sightseeing bus: ¥30

Driver Accommodation: Accommodation is not required for the driver on day trips.
Lunch and Personal Expenses: At your own expense.
Chengdu has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, frequent fog and overcast days, but mild temperatures and no extreme weather.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best seasons to visit Chengdu. The temperatures are comfortable, and the pandas are especially active, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
Summer (June-August): Hot and humid, with daily temperatures exceeding 30°C. This is peak tourist season, and the panda base will be crowded. However, if you can tolerate the heat, you'll find the pandas frequently splashing and playing in the water, which is quite entertaining.
Winter (December-February): Cold but dry, with temperatures around 5-10°C. Fewer tourists and lower ticket prices. If you prefer a quieter experience, winter is a good choice.
Is it possible to swim this distance in the opposite direction?
If you prefer to enjoy a leisurely life in the old town, you can choose to visit People's Park in the morning and then go to the Panda Base in the afternoon. However, the "cost" will be a reduced panda viewing experience.
Could it be extended to 2-3 days?
Of course you can. Day 1 is the same as this itinerary (Panda Base + People's Park + Jinli). You can add more days later: choose to visit Chengdu city (Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Kuanzhai Alley, Wuhou Shrine), or choose a day trip around Chengdu (Sanxingdui, Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain).
